IRT Production Interpreting William and Traders Point

In 2003 I discovered that William Conner was the first legal property owner in Pike Township. But more importantly, I traced the legal description of his site and discovered that his small parcel (80 acres), included the spot where Eagle Creek crosses current day Lafayette Road. Decades later a town would be established at this location and it would be called Traders Point. Conner was long gone. But the connection our neighborhood has to William Conner is indisputable. I encourage everyone to see the new World Premiere production "Interpreting William" at the Indiana Repertory Theatre. It explores the enigmatic figure and underscores the significance of his place in Indiana History and to our neighborhood. But don't expect any mention of Traders Point. For more on the William Conner and Traders Point connection, check out previous blog entries here and here. I also have written a powerpoint about it.

Traders Point and New Life Worship Center

It's been several years since Traders Point Christian Church moved out and New Life Worship Center moved in at 7860 Lafayette Road. They've been a perfect new neighbor. The church now boasts 3500 members and attracts a diverse following from the African American community. Occasionally they invite T.D. Jakes , Pastor of the Potter's House, (at 30,000 members, one of the largest non-denominational churches in America.) Jakes is a bit of a rock star in the black church and his appearances at New Life are well attended.
I noticed in this morning's Indy Star an ad for Jake's visit tomorrow. What caught my attention is the use of the term "Traders Point" in describing the church's location in the Star ad and on their website. This is a small move in the right direction of establishing and maintaining our unique-place identity in Marion County. Thanks to businesses like the Creamery, the Traders Point Shopping Center, and the growing knowledge of the area's history, Traders Point is an area in northwestern Indianapolis known by a growing number of people. And that is a positive move for us as we try to differentiate our area as a special place in the city and the township. Realtors have known for years that the Traders Point area attracts an eclectic group of folks that prefer it to many other available options across multiple price points. We encourage the use of the name Traders Point to define our area and applaud New Life's decision to use the name in its address. As homeowners seek to increase value of their homes and neighborhoods, differentiation and distinctives to an area will have growing importance. If you are choosing a Realtor, make sure they are familiar with the distinctives of our area. Their local market knowledge of our area should enhance the marketing of your valued investment.
